Needing a Boost in the Afternoon?

Do you find yourself reaching for a coffee, soda or a sweet treat? Sometimes, we just want to enjoy that treat, but have you ever considered that your body might be telling you something? Our body houses a magnificent system that's always striving for balance. When we need more energy, our brain signals us to get food. This is a good thing - until it isn't!

The current food landscape isn't helping us to nourish ourselves, in part because the highly addictive substances found in processed foods call to us day and night. They are easily available and can be delivered right to our door without having to leave the couch. This constant consuming is causing a cascade of health problems like; diabetes, high blood pressure, acid reflux, heart disease, weight gain and more.

I'm tired, worn-out and need something to get me through the day.

What is an Adrenal Drink?

Our adrenal glands are part of a collection of structures known as the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal [HPA axis] which is our body's main stress response system. The adrenal glands produce hormones like cortisol, but when they are constantly activated due to the many stressors modern life requires, they can become overwhelmed. We can begin to experience extreme fatigue, poor sleep, foggy brain, and elevated blood sugar levels. Choosing a drink that supports improved hormone balancing can be a very good thing.

This delicious cocktail provides electrolytes, vitamin C, improved hydration and gives antioxidant protection, improved hormone conversions and better immune function. Replenishing key minerals like sodium, potassium and magnesium promotes overall health.

Orange Adrenal Cocktail

Ingredients.

  • 1/2 cup orange juice

  • 1-2 tbsp. full-fat coconut milk [canned]

  • 1 tbsp collagen [optional]

  • 1/8-1/4 tsp. sea salt

Method.

  1. Combine all ingredients in a glass jar.

  2. Shake well.

  3. Pour over ice and enjoy.

For best support, drink between meals either mid-morning or afternoon. Adding collagen and coconut milk can make this a great snack that provides some healthy fats and protein. Plus it tastes like an orange creamsicle!

Not into orange juice? Coconut water is a great alternative just make sure to add some fresh-squeezed lemon or lime juice.

Lime Refresher Adrenal Cocktail

  • 1/8-1/4 tsp. sea salt

Method.

  1. Combine all ingredients into a glass jar.

  2. Shake well.

  3. Pour over ice and enjoy.

Can I Just Buy Something?

Yes you can.

There are lots of hydration powders available and I'd recommend you read the label carefully before purchasing. Find a product that doesnt add sugar like; LMNT, Nectar, Paleovalley Essential Electrolytes or Jigsaw Health Pickleball Cocktail Mix. Follow the direction on the package and you will receive electrolyte support easily.

Remember - Food First.

Adrenal drinks can definitely support the many systems in our body to improve hormone balance. But, it's important to remember that they are a bonus to what you are eating daily. If you're not eating enough food in balanced amounts throughout the day, or relying on processed foods to give you a quick burst of energy, these drinks will likely not be very helpful.

Always begin with what's on your plate - a balance of quality fats, protein and complex carbohydrates.

  • Eat breakfast every day and make it savory.

  • Hydrate throughout the day using filtered water and some electrolyte support.

  • Aim for 25+ grams of protein at each meal.

  • Eat your veggies.

  • Shut down the screens and read a book.

  • Make sleep important - go to bed before 11pm.

  • Go outside and move your body.

  • Breathe and be thankful.

We only have one body where we live every day. What can you do to make your home better?
