Colostrum Considerations

Colostrum is the first form of breast milk that's released by the mammary glands of humans and other mammals after giving birth. Colostrum is nutrient-rich and high in antibodies and antioxidants which build a newborn baby's immune system.




Liquid Gold or Hype?

Because colostrum provides both a nutritional and immunity support to newborns, supplemental powdered forms of cow colostrum have definitely made a noise in the nutritional health space. These powders are showcased to provide gut support, increase immune health along with increased hair, nail, bone and muscle growth. Research is new and has been directed to people with gut diseases and high performance athletes. Early findings are showing some positive results in considering adding colostrum to our diet. But, I believe more research is necessary to actually know if including colostrum will improve our health.

Dosage and Disturbances.

First of all, the research around colostrum was between 10-60 grams, while most colostrum products on the market today include a serving size of around 3 grams or less. The reason for this low dose could be because of digestive issues that can arrise with higher doses.

Common issues reported:

Nausea

Bloating

Diarrhea

This doesn't actually mean you will experience any of these symptoms, and colostrum supplementation is relatively harmless.

The Big Question - Should You Take Colostrum?

My response today...That depends.

Why? Because as with most supplements and 'superfoods' you can purchase, the better question is;

How will taking colostrum benefit me in light of the money I'm spending?

What Type of Colostrum Should I Consider Taking?

  • Colostrum collected from cows after the calf has consumed what it needs.

  • Colostrum collected within 4-6 hours of birth.

  • Colostrum collected from cows fed on grass or hay - free of pesticide contamination.

  • Colostrum free of additives, like added sweeteners and flavors.

  • Note. If you have an allergy to dairy - colostrum is not a good choice.

Be Wise.

There are many supplements to consider when wanting to support health goals.

Unfortunately, we are hard-wired to continue to think that a pill or supplement will do the magic and fix our ever-increasing health issues.

So please, be wise and judicious in adding supplements to your daily health journey.

What I've experienced personally and see with my clients, is an over-saturation of things to take, to do and to eat.

This can cause a weariness and even discouragement as the impact of 'all the things' begins to feel like a huge burden, both in organizing how to dose everything and the financial commitment.

When we focus on simple meals made from good quality protein, nutrient-rich fats, and fiber-filled fruits and vegetables, we are prioritizing our health and providing the best outcomes for a robust quality of life. No one desires to live a long time stuck in a chair due to many health issues watching life go by instead of having the energy to be an active participant.

But good health requires us to do hard things sometimes.

Let's give our tastebuds a chance to actually remember what real foods tastes like and with time, we will find delight in eating well for as long as we are granted life.
